By French writer/directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, is the inspiring true story of two men who should never have met-a quadriplegic aristocrat who was injured in a paragliding accident and a young man from the projects. After Driss (Omar Sy, César Award winner for Best Actor) is hired as caretaker for Philippe (François Cluzet, Tell No One), they learn that sometimes you have to reach into someone else’s world to find what’s missing in your own.

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Monsieur Lazhar tells the poignant story of a Montreal middle school class shaken by the death of their well-liked teacher. Bachir Lazhar (Fellag), a 55-year-old Algerian immigrant, offers the school his services as a substitute teacher and is quickly hired. As he helps the children heal, he also learns to accept his own painful past. This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors.

In 1965 six French New Wave directors took a Paris neighborhood and concocted a short sketch around it. The results sometimes favor character and story, and sometimes local flavor, but almost all are engaging in their own right, offering gloriously French slices of romantic comedy in the sexually open 1960s with “Saint Germain des Prés,” “Montparnasse et Levallois,” “Gare du Nord,” “Rue Saint-Denis,” “Place de l’Étoile” and “La Muette.” This is one of the strongest and most entertaining anthology films to emerge from the 1960s.

REVIEWS:
